EPA-Detectives 1 (Joseph/Who kidnapped the boy?)

The idea of this EPA afternoon is to introduce the theme of detectives and to discover with the children the story of Joseph, drawing from it the lesson that even when God puts us in difficult situations, he has a good plan for us, for which we just need to be patient.

Introduction to the topic (Game)

In the first EPA afternoon we introduce the concept of detectives to the children. The day leaders take on this task, they 'put them to the test' by introducing two of the female leaders at the front and explaining to the researchers that the two will come out and swap a bit of stuff on them, so the children have to be observant before the two come out. On their return when they recognise the subject they are 'allowed' into the investigation.

Praise and sharing

Once the children discover who has actually disappeared, there is praise and sharing, which has the key message "Every evil for good" using the verse from Genesis 50:20 "Behold, ye have indeed devised evil against me, but God hath turned it for good," which is very appropriate because these are actually the words of Joseph himself.

Small groups and creativity

The children then have a creative activity where their task is to draw Joseph's coat on a coloured piece of paper and then decorate it with yarn to make it colourful.

You can swap the brag and the detective game or the treat and the big game, but it is important not to have drastic changes like swapping the sharing and the big game because then the kids will know the story before they start following the clues and it will cause them to lose interest !!!!
